HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 19, 2006) – Senior Apryl Webb (East Orange, N.J.) went 12-2 on the day and set a new school record for career wins in the sabre as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team finished in second place at the Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference Dual Meet Championship on Sunday at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. Webb, who now has 75 career wins, broke the previous school mark of 71 victories, which was set by Teresa Bustamante (Dover, N.J.) from 2001-04.
Stevens finished the day with a 4-1 mark following wins over Yeshiva University (22-5), Hunter College (22-5), City College of New York (24-3) and Haverford College (18-9). The Ducks’ lone loss was a 19-8 setback against Drew University, which claimed its fourth straight conference championship with a perfect 5-0 record on Sunday.
Haverford finished third with a 3-2 mark. CCNY was fourth with a 2-3 record. Hunter claimed fifth following a 1-4 showing. Yeshiva came in sixth as the Maccabees dropped all five dual meets.
For Stevens, senior Helen Kourlos (Astoria, N.Y.) posted a 10-3 mark in the foil. Junior Rachel Cortez (Vauxhall, N.J.) added 10 victories as well. Junior Colleen Kirk (Churchville, Pa.) earned six wins for the Ducks.
In the sabre, junior Nicole Moldovan (Kinnelon, N.J.) went 9-4. Sophomore Laura Sodon (West Milford, N.J.) picked up seven victories.
The epee squad was led by senior Judith Generoso (Elmhurst, N.Y.), who went 12-1 on the day. In the process, Generoso set a new school record for wins in a season. Generoso’s 51 victories broke the previous mark held by Andrea Chimel (Long Valley, N.J.), who earned 48 victories for the Ducks in 2001-02.
Stevens also received a strong performance in the epee from sophomore Rachel Cannell (Asbury, N.J.), who posted a 9-6 mark. Sophomore Emily Freier (Manalapan, N.J.) landed eight wins.
The EWFC Dual Meet Championship marked the end of the regular season for Stevens. The Ducks finished the year with a new school record for wins in a season with an 18-5 mark. The previous school record of 17 wins was set in 2001-02. Stevens will return to action on Saturday, February 25 when it competes at the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association Championships at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. The competition is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
