Webb and Cortez Lead Women’s Fencing at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (February 5, 2006) – Senior sabreist Apryl Webb (East Orange, N.J.) and junior foilist Rachel Cortez (Vauxhall, N.J.) established new school single-season records for victories in their respective weapons as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team went 2-3 in five matches on Sunday at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.  With their two victories, the Ducks ran their overall record to 14-4 on the year.

Stevens posted wins over Johns Hopkins University (14-13) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (27-0).  The Ducks also suffered losses at the hands of Temple (23-4), Rutgers University (19-8) and Farleigh Dickinson University (17-10).

Webb set a new school mark for victories in the sabre (37) as she went 8-7 on the day.  Cortez established a new single-season record in the foil with seven victories at Temple.

In the epee, the Ducks received strong performances from sophomores Emily Freier (Manalapan, N.J.) and Rachel Cannell (Asbury, N.J.) as well as senior Judith Generoso (Elmhurst, N.Y.).  Freier posted an 8-7 record for Stevens on Sunday while Cannell and Generoso earned seven victories apiece.

Junior foilist Natalie Chabebe (West New York, N.J.) came up with a clutch win for the Ducks against Johns Hopkins.  Filling in as a substitute late in the match, Chabebe’s victory clinched the win for Stevens.  Chabebe also came up with a victory against FDU.

The Ducks will be in action when they compete in the Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference Dual Meet Championship at Hunter College in New York, N.Y.  Stevens will face Haverford College, Yeshiva University, City College of New York, Drew University and Hunter.  The competition will begin at 10 a.m.
