Men’s Tennis Claims First Victory of the Season

Steve Su claimed a 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles against Franklin & Marshall.

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 13, 2006) – Senior Steve Su (Holmdel, N.J.) rallied after losing the first set to post a 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team knocked off Franklin & Marshall College, 5-2, on Monday in Orlando, Fla.  The win was the first of the season for the Ducks and raised the team’s record to 1-3 overall.

At third singles, junior Boris Kocherov (Edison, N.J.) followed a similar pattern as he dropped the first set then captured the next two en route to a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.  Junior Yuriy Stelmakh (Clifton, N.J.) was extended to three sets as well before claiming a 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles for the Ducks.  Junior Ian Mullican (Gillette, N.J.) was victorious in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) at sixth singles.

In doubles play, Stevens captured two of the three flights to claim the team point.  Sophomore Ricky Bawa (Lyndhurst, N.J.) and Su teamed up for an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 position.  Freshman Kobe Attias (Brick, N.J.) and sophomore Arjun Mehta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won at No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-2.

The Ducks will be in action against Emory & Henry College on Tuesday at noon in Orlando.
