Hopkins Leads Women's Lacrosse Past Farmingdale in Conference Opener

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 22, 2006)  - Freshman midfielder Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, Md.) paced the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team with six goals as it earned its first win of the season, 19-4, against Farmingdale State University on Wednesday afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y.  With the win, the Ducks moved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline conference, while the Rams dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Stevens netted seven goals within the first 7:30 of the first half.  Hopkins started the scoring early with her first goal of the game at 2:03.  Freshman attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) totaled the team’s second goal of the game 51 seconds later.  Hopkins and senior attack Mary Schurgot (Barnegat, N.J.) tallied the Ducks’ next two goals within 1:39 of each other, giving Stevens a 4-0 advantage.  Senior defender Melissa Scott (Barnegat, N.J.) put the Ducks on top 5-0 with her first goal of the game at the 5:31 mark.  Hopkins added two more goals within a 41-second span, and sophomore attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored her first tally at 14:02.

Farmingdale got on the board at 16:24 with a free-position goal from sophomore midfielder Lisa Gagliardo (Dix Hills, N.Y.).  Scott, Hopkins and freshman defender Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) each netted one goal apiece within 2:12 to give Stevens a commanding 11-1 advantage. 

Junior attack Natalie Budinich (East Northport, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the game with 6:29 to play in the half for the Rams.

Mather added her second score with 18 seconds on the clock to give the Ducks a 12-2 lead at the break.

Budinich scored her second goal for Farmingale to open up the second half.

Sophomore attack Jen Ramirez (Morristown, N.J.), sophomore defender Beth Rychcik (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), sophomore attack Joanna Sweetgall (Allendale, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Ali Palen (Walden, N.Y.) all netted their first goals of the season as Stevens out scored Farmingdale 7-2 in the second half.  Mather added her third goal of the game while Schurgot picked up her second as Stevens continued to pullaway.  Hopkins tallied her season-high sixth goal with under a minute to play for the Ducks.

Stevens out-shot Farmingdale 47-7 in the game and forced 31 turnovers by the Rams. 

Sophomore Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) made one save in goal for the Ducks and picked up her first win of the season.

Stevens is back in action on Saturday, March 25, when it hosts Villa Julie College at 1:00 p.m.
