HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 13, 2006) – The seventh-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team moved to 4-0-1 after playing to a scoreless tie in double-overtime against The College of New Jersey Wednesday evening at DeBaun Field. The Lions, ranked No. 16 by D3Kicks.com this week, moved to 2-2-1. Stevens was ranked No. 4 by D3Kicks.com in its latest poll.
Stevens and TCNJ each had several close scoring opportunities in the second half. Less than five minutes in, freshman forward Terrance Johnson (Slidell, La.) lined up a shot from the left side on a pass from sophomore forward Jeremy Lippel (West Orange, N.J.) that sailed just wide of the right post.
One minute later, TCNJ senior forward Matt Luber (Delran, N.J.) set up one-on-one with Stevens senior goalie Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J.). Luber sent a pass to senior defender Tim Dudek (Medford, N.J.) on the left side, but Dudek’s shot glided high.
The Ducks controlled play in the first overtime, out-shooting the Lions 3-0. Junior midfielder Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, Pa.) nailed a shot in from the right corner 2:19 into overtime, but junior goalkeeper Matt Kasperavicius (Jackson, N.J.) was right there to make the save on the play.
The Ducks had one final scoring opportunity with less than a minute remaining in the final overtime with senior midfielder George Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) and Kasperavicius all alone at the net. Gkionis sent a hard shot from inside the box, but Kasperavicius came up with the save and held the ball for the remaining 52 seconds in the game.
Stevens controlled possession for the better part of the contest, holding an 18-11 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Gkionis, junior forward Mike Kaiser (Roy, Utah) and senior defender Nick Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) led Stevens offensively with three shots apiece.
Celentano recorded five saves for Stevens, while Kasperavicius posted six stops for TCNJ.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson University at 7 p.m.
