HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 29, 2006) – Junior outside hitter Dawn Herring (Prince Frederick, Md.) surpassed 1,000 career kills in leading the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team to a 30-14, 30-21, 30-13 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Friday evening at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. With their eighth straight victory, the Ducks improved to 15-3 on the year and 4-0 in the Skyline Conference.
Herring, who is the all-time leader for career kills at Stevens, entered the match with 997 kills in her two-plus years with the Ducks. Her third kill of the match against the Dolphins came midway through the first game as she staked Stevens to an 18-8 lead as she received the ball on the left side and placed a shot that landed between two defenders in the middle of the court. Herring finished the match with 13 kills – giving her 1,010 kills in her career. She also had five digs on Friday.
On a night that belonged to Herring, sophomore middle blocker Summer Hamilton (San Diego, Calif.) claimed a little bit of the spotlight as well as she broke Herring’s single-match record for attack percentage. Against the Dolphins, Hamilton hit .813 with 13 kills and no attack errors in 16 total attempts. Herring’s original record of .783 (18-0-23) was set against Montclair State University on September 17, 2004.
Stevens also received a strong performance from senior setter Micki Biltz (Lakewood, Ohio) on Friday as she posted a team-high 29 assists. Junior right-side JoAnne Pojuner (Princeton Junction, N.J.) chipped in with five kills and no errors in seven attempts (.714 hitting percentage).
Mount Saint Vincent’s four-match win streak came to an end with the loss as the Dolphins fell to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the Skyline.
The Ducks return to action on Wednesday when they take on Vassar College at 7 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
