Senior Nick Gkionis netted two goals at the Ducks cruised past Old Westbury

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 30, 2006) Freshman midfielder Al Lockhart (Decatur, Ga.) and senior defender Nick Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) totaled two goals apiece as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team defeated SUNY College at Old Westbury, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Field.  With the win, the Ducks improved to 9-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Panthers dropped to 3-5-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the league with the loss. 

Stevens started the scoring early in the game as it took advantage of a corner kick 4:24 into the game.  Junior midfielder Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, Pa.) found Gkionis in front of the net off a long pass from the right side to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, Lockhart slipped a shot past junior goalkeeper Brian Hicks (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to put Stevens on top 2-0.

Gkionis earned his second tally of the day off a penalty kick at the 18:48 mark.  Gkionis shot sailed into the left corner of the goal to give the Ducks a three–goal lead.

Lockhart added his second goal of the day on a pass from freshman midfielder Mike Carns (Pearland, Texas) to give Stevens a comfortable 4-0 lead at the break.  Carns notched his first collegiate point on the play.

Sophomore forward Jeremy Lippel (West Orange, N.J.) opened up the second half with a goal 3:52 in off a breakaway.  Lippel sent the shot off his right foot and into the top left corner of the goal to increase the Ducks’ lead to 5-0.

Senior midfielder George Gkionis (Jackson, N.J.) rounded out the scoring for Stevens in the 49th minute off a pass from freshman forward Brian Weldon (Frenchtown, N.J.). 

Old Westbury got on the board as it took advantage of a Stevens own goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

Stevens dominated play as it out-shot Old Westbury 27-4 and held a 16-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Netwon, N.J.) earned the win for Stevens and registered one save in the game.  Hicks totaled six for the Panthers.

Stevens will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Union, N.J. to play Kean University at 4 p.m.
