Wrestling Competes in Centennial Opener

Sophomore Pat Conrad picked up his first two conference wins of the season on Saturday.

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (January 20, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team opened up its Centennial Conference competition with a tri-match against Washington & Lee University, McDaniel College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturay afternoon.  Junior Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) led Stevens with wins against all three teams. 

 

Against Washington & Lee, Stevens was defeated 30-11.  Freshman Mark Bistis (Readington, N.J.) picked up a win over Samuel Brusca at 125 pounds.  Freshman Leo Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) earned a win at the 149 class with a major decision over Roderick Gagne.  MacWhinnie collected a major decision victory over Antony Boniello at 165 pounds.  Freshman Ernie Guaimano (Hillsborough, N.J.) also earned his first conference win at 184 pounds over Max Courtney.

In their next match against McDaniel, the Ducks were defeated 33-17 and earned wins in four weight classes.  Sophomore Pat Conrad (Enola, Pa.) picked up the first win for Stevens and his first centennial victory with a 3-1 decision over Randy Neaton at 133 pounds.  Dormann and MacWhinnie picked up their second conference victories of the day at 149 and 165 pounds.  Senior Will Young (Willingboro, N.J.) earned his first conference win at the heavyweight position over Tim Hall.

In the last match of the day against Merchant Marine, Stevens earned four wins and, but were defeated by a close 30-21 margin.  Bistis, Conrad, and Dormann each picked up wins in the 133, 141 and 149 weight class.  MacWhinnie earned his third win of the day at 165 pounds over Trever Muhler by a technical fall.

Stevens is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Trinity College at 7 p.m. in Walker Gym.  The match will be available on www.duckcast.com.
