MacWhinnie Finishes 3-0 as Wrestling Competes in Three Dual Matches

Freshman Leo Dormann picked up two wins on Saturday for Stevens.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 8, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team dropped three dual matches to the University of Southern Maine, 27-16, New York University, 35-9, and Bridgewater State College, 31-17, at the NYU duals on Saturday, January 6, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.  The Ducks now stand at 3-5 on the season.

Against Southern Maine, sophomore Pat Conrad (Enola, Pa.) picked up the first win for Stevens with a 3-2 win over Doug Christensen at 133 pounds.  Freshman Leo Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) gave the Ducks a 9-7 advantage with a win by pin over Michael Dumas at 149 pounds.   Junior Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) collected an 8-0 win at 165 pounds over Shane Stephenson to tie the match at 13-13.  After dropping matches in the next two weight classes, senior Will Young (Willingboro, N.J.) earned a win at the heavyweight position over Adans Cueto, 4-1.

Conrad, MacWhinnie and freshman James Roarty (Hyde Park, Mass.) each picked up their second wins of the day in the next dual against NYU.  Conrad defeated Jon Moyet 3-2 at 133 pounds.  MacWhinnie earned a 4-3 victory over Ryan Cooley at 165 pounds, and Roarty shut out Alex Chianurashvili 4-0.

Against Bridgewater State, Stevens earned wins in four classes.  Dormann picked up his second win of the day at 149 pounds against Jack Attaya with a 16-0 technical fall.  MacWhinnie followed Dormann with a 16-0 victory over Phil Mastro at 165 pounds.  Roarty collected his second win with a 9-0 defeat at 197 pounds over Steven Gaudreau.  Young brought home his second win with an 8-1 decision over Paul Fleury at the heavyweight position.

Stevens is back in action on January 11 when it travels to New York to face Hunter College at 6 p.m.
