HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 27, 2007) – Needing just a win on Saturday afternoon to propel itself into the 2007 Empire 8 Tournament, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell short against conference foe Washington & Jefferson College by a final score of 1-0 at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The match also served as the regular-season finale for the Ducks. With the loss, Stevens dropped to a mark of 12-6 and had its 11-game winning streak at home snapped. The run dated back to a 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University on October 21, 2006. As for the Presidents, they improved to 14-3 on the year and will host the league playoffs, which will begin next week.
Washington & Jefferson notched the game-winning goal in the 10th-minute when senior forward Amanda Howard (Wexford, Pa.) found junior forward Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa.) at the left side of the goal. Peery then punched a shot into the top-right side of the cage to account for the lone score of the contest.
Stevens' junior goalkeeper Stephanie Smith and W&J sophomore goaltender Ashley Rund (Columbus, Ohio) turned aside four shots each. The Ducks held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Jessica Reed and the Ducks have now completed their regular-season schedule. They can still clinch a berth in the Empire 8 tournament with a Utica College victory over Nazareth College on Sunday. The opening face-off for that game is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. Stevens is also awaiting word on a possible spot in the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Championships.
