UTICA, N.Y. (October 27, 2007) – Three different players on the No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team tallied a score in the latter half on Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium as Stevens defeated Utica College, 3-0. With the victory, the Ducks finished the regular season with an overall record of 15-1-2 and a perfect mark in the Empire 8 with a tally of 7-0. They have also extended their conference unbeaten streak to 49 straight games. As for the Pioneers, they ended off the year with a record of 10-7 and a league mark of 5-2.
Stevens, which is also ranked sixth in the most recent D3Kicks.com tally, has earned the No. 1 seed in the Empire 8 tournament. It will take on the No. 4 seed Nazareth College on Friday. As for Utica, it has secured the second spot in the playoffs and will host St. John Fisher College on that same day.
In the match, the Ducks jumped out in front in the 54th-minute when sophomore forward Todd Sheridan scored on an unassisted effort. On the play, Pioneers' senior goaltender Andrew Miller (Clinton, N.Y.) came out of the net and was beat by Sheridan, who punched the ball into a wide-open net. The following minute, junior midfielder Jeremy Lippel gave the Ducks a 2-0 advantage when he scored off a long pass from senior midfielder Ryan Wilkison. Then, in the 73rd-minute, sophomore forward Terrance Johnson capped off the scoring when he beat Miller on a breakaway off a feed from Wilkison.
Stevens' freshman goalkeeper Zach Carr made a game-high three saves while Miller stopped two shots for Utica. The Ducks held a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue and his squad have now completed their regular-season schdule. They will return to action this Friday when they host Nazareth in the semi-final round of the Empire 8 tournament. No starting time has been announced yet.
