HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 4, 2007) – Sophomore forward Terrance Johnson tallied a pair of goals and was tabbed as the 2007 Empire 8 Men's Soccer Tournament MVP on Sunday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J., as Stevens Institute of Technology clinched its first championship in the Empire 8 conference. However, including the years that Stevens competed in the Skyline Conference, the Ducks obtained their fifth-consecutive league title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With the win, Stevens went to 17-1-2 on the season. The victory also extended its unbeaten streak at home to 58 consecutive games. As for the Cardinals, they dropped to 11-7-1 overall.
The Ducks opened up the scoring in the 32nd-minute when senior forward Mike Kaiser sent a long pass to Johnson, who then punched a ball into the back of the net from 12 yards out. Early in the second half, Johnson notched his second goal of the contest when he slid a ball underneath St. John Fisher sophomore goaltender Adam Durst (Rochester, N.Y.) to give Stevens a 2-0 advantage. Kaiser and freshman defender Michael Quijano were credited with the assists on the play.
Durst made a game-high six saves for the Cardinals while Stevens freshman goalkeeper Zach Carr turned two shots aside to record his 10th shutout of the season. The Ducks held a 19-13 advantage in shots as well as a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue and his squad now await word on where they will be seeded in the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. The brackets are scheduled to be announced tomorrow at 11 a.m. on www.ncaasports.com.
