HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 4, 2007) – Senior and sixth-ranked Brandon MacWhinnie notched a 7-5 sudden victory in the 174-lb. contest against The College of New Jersey junior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, N.J.) on Wednesday night at Walker Gymnasium, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team dropped its home opener to No. 8 The College of New Jersey by a final score of 24-16.
At 125 lbs, sophomore Kyle Brisson fell to Lions' freshman Dan Hughes (Delran, N.J.), 6-2. Brisson opened up the scoring with a takedown, which was immediately followed by a reversal from Hughes to knot the match at 2-2. In the second period, Hughes used an escape and another takedown to take a 5-2 lead. There was a point handed to Hughes at the end of the third for riding time.
In the 141-lb. match, junior Pat Conrad used two takedowns in the first period to major sophomore Brian Suozzo (Old Bridge, N.J.) of TCNJ, 15-4. After an escape cut the Ducks' lead to 4-2 after two periods, Conrad tallied three takedowns and three near fall points in the final period to get the victory.
At 149 lbs, sophomore Leo Dormann picked up three team points after defeating Lions' freshman John Barnett (Oak Ridge, N.J.) by a 4-2 count. Leading 2-1 after one period, Dormann and Barnett both ran away from each other's clutches in the second and third, respectively, to take a point each (3-2). Once the match was finished, Dormann was awarded the extra point for riding time.
In the 157-lb. weight class, TCNJ sophomore Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, N.J.) got an escape in the final period to record a 4-3 decision over sophomore Charles Favia. Locked up at 3-3 going into the third, DiColo chose the option of starting down. Soon after, Favia cut DiColo looking for a takedown to win the match but it wasn't to be.
At 165 lbs, junior Jordan Chacon did not score a point as Lions' junior Al Wonesh (Columbus, N.J.) notched a major decision (12-0). Wonesh accumulated two takedown, two reversal and six near fall points in the match.
The 174-lb. contest featured a re-match from the Spartan Invitational with MacWhinnie and Osgoodby. On Sunday, Osgoodby majored MacWhinnie, 12-2. Tonight, the three-time national qualifier found himself down by a score of 4-1 after two periods. In the final period, MacWhinnie chose top and rode Osgoodby, who then escaped to take a 5-1 advantage. MacWhinnie quickly recorded a takedown to cut the deficit to two. Then, in the final 30 seconds, MacWhinnie got a penalty and riding time point to send the contest into overtime. In the first overtime period, MacWhinnie immediately took down Osgoodby to win it.
In the 184-lb. weight class, TCNJ picked up its third major decision of the night as freshman Joe Bozzomo (Middlesex, N.J.) downed freshman James Ray, 11-2. Bozzomo used a five-point spurt in the opening period to take hold of the match. Later, in the third period, Bozzomo notched another six points via two takedowns, one escape and the riding time point.
At 197 lbs, freshman Justin Galati faced off against Lions' senior Shawn Vanwingerden (Wantage, N.J.). Leading 4-2 after one period, Vanwingerden began the second on the mat. He escaped for a point and then got a takedown to take a 7-2 lead. After that, Vanwingerden put the contest away for good with two near fall points and one penalty point for a 10-2 advantage.
Head Coach Mike Clayton and the Ducks return to action on January 5 when they travel to Millersville, Pa. to duel with Millersville University. The match is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
