Women's Fencing Surpasses 300 Victories in Program History; Cortez Becomes All-Time Leader for Career Wins in Foil

Rachel Cortez moved into first place on the career wins list in the foil on Sunday.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 11, 2007) – Senior Rachel Cortez became the all-time leader for career wins in the foil (during the three-weapon era) as she went 11-4 in leading the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team to a second-place finish during the 2006-07 Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Dual Meet Championship on Sunday at Hunter College in New York, N.Y.  Cortez now has 95 career wins.  She surpassed Amy Chang's mark of 87 victories from 1998-2002.

Drew University captured the overall title with a perfect 5-0 mark on the day.  Stevens went 4-1 with its only loss being a 17-10 setback against Drew.  Haverford College finished third with a 3-2 record.  Hunter College (2-3), City College of New York (1-4) and Yeshiva University (0-5) rounded out the field.

In the first round of the day, Stevens opened with an 18-9 win over Hunter.  The sabre squad went 8-1 against the Hawks while the epee team earned seven victories.  In the second round, the epee squad defeated Drew by the score of 5-4.  The foil team suffered a narrow 5-4 loss to the Rangers.

During Round 3, Stevens rolled to a 19-8 win over Yeshiva as the Ducks won all three weapons – foil (7-2), sabre (7-2) and epee (5-4).  That victory turned out to be the 300th win in the history of the program for Stevens.  Linda Vollkommer-Lynch, who has been head coach of the team for 33 years, has been around for all 300 victories.  During her career, she has amassed an impressive record of 302-222 (0.576 winning percentage).

Stevens swept its way to a 22-5 win over CCNY in the fourth round with victories in the foil (8-1), sabre (9-0) and epee (5-4).  The Ducks closed out the championship with a 16-11 win over Haverford.  The foil and epee squads won by identical 6-3 scores.

Freshman Alexis Sowuleski was one of the top performers for the Ducks at the EWFC Championship.  Sowuleski went 12-1 on the day in the epee.  Sophomore Rachel Cannell finished with an 11-4 mark as the epee team went 5-0 overall.

In the foil, senior Colleen Kirk tallied nine victories.  She also moved into third place on the all-time list at Stevens with 86 career victories.  Sophomore Khairun Nisa Aziz was 8-7 in the foil.

The sabre team was led by senior Maia Hadidi, who posted a 10-5 mark.  In the process, she moved into fourth place on the career wins list with 55 victories.  Hadidi is also now second in program history for career winning percentage (0.670).  Sophomores Beatrice Wilson and Erica Mondadori went 9-4 and 8-5, respectively.

The Ducks will be off until February 25 when they host the Stevens Invitational at 10 a.m.  That competition will also be used as the EWFC Individual Championship.
