ITHACA, N.Y. (March 24, 2007) – After losing all three doubles contests, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team found itself in too big of a hole as the Ducks suffered a 6-3 loss to Ithaca College on Saturday at Cornell University’s Reid Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. The loss dropped the Ducks to 4-6 on the year. The Bombers improved to 4-8 overall with the win.
At first doubles, junior Ricky Bawa (Lyndhurst, N.J.) and freshman Piotr Rusinkiewicz (Califon, N.J.) fell to Ithaca’s freshman tandem of Taylor Borda (Chester, N.J.) and Danny Wolk (Potomac, Md.) by the score of 8-5. Senior Boris Kocherov (Edison, N.J.) and junior Arjun Mehta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dropped an 8-6 decision to freshmen Liam Berkowitz (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and Jake Bear (Centerville, Mass.) at second doubles. In third doubles, sophomore Kobe Attias (Brick, N.J.) and freshman Russ Suereth (Hewitt, N.J.) fell to junior Jeff Buffum (Morristown, N.J.) and sophomore Andrew Dunnick (Ithaca, N.Y.), 8-4.
Bawa opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Borda. Kocherov added a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Bear at second singles. Rusinkiewicz knocked off Berkowitz in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) at third singles. Mehta lost in a second-set tiebreaker to Wolk. The score of that match was 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in favor of the Bombers. Attias fell in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) to Buffum at No. 5 singles. Senior Ian Mullican (Gillette, N.J.) suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to sophomore Zach Baum (Evanston, Ill.) at sixth singles.
Sunday's men's tennis match between Stevens and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has been postponed. The Ducks will return to action on Wednesday when they host Mount Saint Mary College at 4 p.m.
