HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 28, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored 11 runs on 13 hits as it defeated Vassar College, 11-2, on Wednesday in Hoboken, N.J. With their fifth straight win, the Ducks improved to 7-9 on the season, while Vassar dropped to 1-5 with the loss.
Stevens was led offensively by senior Andrew Tesoriero (Dunedin, Fla.) with three hits and three RBIs. Senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J) went 3-for-5 with one run scored and three RBIs. Freshman Russ Grimes (South Brunswick, N.J.) scored three runs and totaled one hit, and freshman Eddie Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman Gerald DiMaso (Holmdel, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season as he gave up only one run on one hit in two innings of work.
The Ducks opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. After back-to-back singles with one out, Stevens scored its first run on a single by freshman Anthony Andrews (Hampton Bays, N.Y.). With runners on second and third, senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) singled to score Daniele for the Ducks’ second run of the inning. Birkenstock then sent a single up the middle to score Grimes and Andrews.
Vassar scored one run in the top of the fourth frame, but Stevens answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Stevens broke the game open in the fifth with two outs. Tesoriero’s single to left field scored two runs for the Ducks during the four-run inning.
Sophomore John Snyder (Hamilton, N.J.) was tagged with the loss for Vassar as he gave up four runs on four hits in one inning of work.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Patchogue, N.Y. to face St. Joseph’s College in a doubleheader. The first game will begin at noon.
