Picerno Breaks All-Time Record for Career Wins as Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. Josephs

Junior Scott Picerno picked up his third victory of the season and set a new record for career wins at Stevens in the Ducks' first game against St. Joseph's.

 

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (March 31, 2007)Junior Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J.) broke the all-time record for career wins at Stevens as he led the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 7-3 victory over St. Joseph's College in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  In two-plus seasons with the Ducks, Picerno has now amassed 18 career victories, which surpasses Eugene Tkac and Mike Belz in the record books at Stevens.  In the second game, the Ducks lost a close 4-3 decision to the Golden Eagles.  Stevens now stands at 8-10 overall and 5-1 in the league.

 

 

In the first game, St. Joseph 's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  However, the Ducks scored four runs in the top of the second frame en-route to their fifth conference win of the season.  Senior Andrew Tesoriero ( Dunedin, Fla. ) led off the inning with a single.  Junior John Frustaci ( Franklin Lakes , N.J.) and freshman Eddie Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J.) earned back-to-back walks to load the bases.  Junior David Katusa ( Franklin Township , N.J.) was also walked which gave Stevens its first run of the game.  Senior Eric McCormick ( Edison, N.J. ) kept the rally going with a single that scored two more runs.  Three batters later, senior Adam Sandt ( Allentown, Pa. ) drew a walk to give Stevens a 4-3 advantage.

 

 

The Ducks added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

 

 

Junior Scott Picerno ( Bayonne, N.J. ) picked up his third win of the season on the mound for Stevens.  In nine innings of work, Picerno gave up three runs on nine hits, while striking out 10.  Tesoriero led Stevens offensively as he finished the game 3-for-5 with one run scored.  Sophomore Joe Gunshor ( Ridgefield, Conn. ) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and McCormick went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs. 

 

 

In the second game, senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J) singled to score the Ducks' first run and Frustaci picked up two RBIs as Stevens scored three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. 

 

 

St. Joseph 's scored two runs in the second inning to close to within one.  The Golden Eagles went ahead for good in the fourth inning on two-run single by junior Alec Regruto ( Syosset, N.Y. ).

 

 

Gunshor led Stevens offensively as he finished the game 2-for-4 with one run scored.  Birkenstock finished the game 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.  Frustaci went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.  Sophomore Bill Jennings ( Southampton, N.J. ) picked up the loss on the mound in 3.1 innings of work.  Jennings gave up four runs on six hits, while striking out two.

 

 

Stevens will return to action on Sunday when it hosts College of Mount Saint Vincent in a doubleheader.  The first game will begin at noon.
