Baseball Sweeps Mount Saint Vincent in Doubleheader

Senior Jim Waterman picked up his second win of the season against Mount Saint Vincent in game 1.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 1, 2007) – On Sunday, the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team totaled a combined 25 hits and scored 23 runs as it earned a sweep of the College of Mount Saint Vincent.  The Ducks won the first game 11-4 and posted a 12-6 victory in the second game.  The Ducks improved their record to 10-10 overall and 7-1 in the league.

In the first game, the Dolphins held a 4-1 advantage headed into the sixth inning, but Stevens used a seven-run sixth inning to take the lead for good.  With one out, senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J) started the Ducks’ rally with a single.  Senior Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) drove in the first run for Stevens with a single to right field.  Junior David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J.) singled on the next play to score the Ducks second run of the inning.  After scoring the next two runs on an error, freshman Russ Grimes (South Brunswick, N.J.) singled up the middle and sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) singled to centerfield to score the last three runs of the inning.

The Ducks added two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth inning.

Junior John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) led the Ducks offensively, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.  Birkenstock went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while senior Andrew Tesoriero (Dunedin, Fla.) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.  Sophomore Alex Sota (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound for Stevens in six innings of work.  Sota gave up four runs on six hits, while striking out five.  Junior Chris Burgess (Palisades Park, N.J.) earned his second save of the season.

Freshman Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs to lead the Dolphins.  Junior Jon O’Leary (Bohemia, N.Y.) suffered the loss for MSV as he gave up eight runs on six hits. 

In game two, MSV got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but Stevens answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Gunshor doubled to centerfield with one out.  After Sandt walked, Birkenstock doubled to leftfield to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead.  Birkenstock scored the third run of the inning on a single by Tesoriero.

Stevens increased its lead to 7-1 with four runs in the second frame.  Grimes led off the inning with a single and would eventually score on a double by Gunshor.  Senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) totaled his second homerun of the season, which also scored Gunshor on the play.  Stevens scored its fourth run of the inning on a walk by freshman Eddie Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J.)

The Dolphins would cut the Ducks lead to 8-5, scoring two runs in the third and two in the fourth.  Stevens put the game away for good when they added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-5 advantage.

Both teams scored a run apiece in the sixth inning.

Gunshor finished the game 4-for 4 with five runs scored and two RBIs to lead Stevens offensively.  He totaled two doubles, a triple and a homerun in the game.  Tesoriero went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Birkenstock went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.  Senior Jim Waterman (Mullica Hill, N.J.) picked up his second win of the season in 4.1 innings of work.  Waterman gave up four runs on eight hits.

Sophomore Mike Ruckdaschel (East Meadow, N.Y.) finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Mount Saint Vincent.  Freshman Anthony Brestolli (Wyckoff, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with two runs.  Junior Al Schor (Norwalk, Conn.) led the team with three RBIs.

Stevens will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Madison, N.J. to play Drew University at 3:30 p.m.
