Baseball Sweeps Mount Saint Mary in Conference Action

Junior Scott Picerno picked up his fourth win of the season in game two against Mount Saint Mary.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 24, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept an important conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday afternoon.  Stevens earned a 10-4 victory in the first game and defeated the Blue Knights 12-6 in game two.  With the wins, the Ducks improved to 15-17 overall and 11-5 in the conference, while Mount Saint Mary dropped to 8-15 and 5-9 in the league with the losses.

In the nine-inning opener, Stevens plated 10 runs on 16 hits and was led by senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs along with a two-run homerun.  Senior Andrew Tesoriero (Dunedin, Fla.) also finished the game 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.  Freshman Mark Rasulo (Irvington, N.Y.) added his first homerun of the season and finished the game 1-for-3.

Stevens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first frame.  Sandt walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a single by senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J.).  Tesoriero singled to score Sandt and Birkenstock scored on a single by junior John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J.).

Mount Saint Mary tied the score 2-2 in the top of the second.  Senior Stephen Cabarcas (Middletown, N.J.) hit a homerun to lead off the inning.    The Blue Knights scored their second run on a fielders’ choice hit by freshman Justin Cardenas (Leonia, N.J.).

The Ducks tacked on two runs of their own in the bottom of the second and took the lead for good in the game.  They added an additional two runs in the third to jump ahead 6-2.  Tesoriero, Frustaci and freshman Eddie Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J.) each had back-to-back singles in the inning. 

Mount Saint Mary chipped away at the Stevens lead and got as close as 6-4 in the seventh.  An RBI single by senior Damon Kennedy (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored two runs for the Blue Knights.

Stevens preserved the win with four runs in the eighth.  Solo homeruns by freshman Mark Rasulo (Irvington, N.Y.) and Birkenstock highlighted the inning along with a two-run shot by Sandt.

Senior Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) earned his first win of the season in five innings of work, giving up two runs on seven hits.

Sophomore Frank Snyder (Wallkill, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Blue Knights as he gave up six runs on nine hits in two innings of work.

In the second game, Mount Saint Mary jumped ahead 3-0 in the first, but Stevens answered back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 3-3.

Stevens went ahead, 4-3, on a homerun by Tesoriero in the third.  The Ducks went on to score three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 advantage.  Gunshor, Sandt and Birkenstock led off the inning with three straight singles.  The Ducks scored their first run on an error by the Blue Knights second baseman.  McCormick was walked to score the  second run of the inning for Stevens.  Sophomore Dan Silva (Boonton Township, N.J.) smashed an RBI double to centerfield to score Birkenstock.

The Ducks added five runs on five hits in the sixth to stake a 12-3 lead.  Frustaci added a two-run shot over the left field fence to pick up his third homerun of the season.

The Blue Knights mounted a come back in the top of the seventh.  Junior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) sent a long fly ball over the left field fence to plate three runs for Mount Saint Mary.  The Blue Knights then loaded the bases on two walks and a single, but junior Armando Suarez (Long Valley, N.J.) struck out senior Frank Muscente (Wallkill, N.Y.) to clinch the victory for Stevens.

Sandt and sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs apiece.  Sandt also picked up two RBI’s, while Tesoriero totaled five in the game.  Frustaci went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Junior Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J.) earned the win for Stevens on the mound in four innings of work, giving up three runs on six hits. 

Freshman Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game two for the Blue Knights in 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits.

Stevens will be back in action on Saturday when hosts Farmingdale State College on Spring Sports Day.  The doubleheader will begin at noon.
