Mather Finishes with Six Points as Women’s Lacrosse Rolls to 15-4 Win over Kean in Skyline Action

Liz Mather had three goals and three assists as Stevens topped Kean, 15-4.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 6, 2007) – Tied at 3-3 at intermission, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team out-scored Kean University 12-1 in the second half en route to a 15-4 victory over the Cougars on Friday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J.  The Ducks evened their record at 5-5 on the year and improved to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play with the win.

Stevens took the lead for good 1:48 into the second half as junior attack Liz Mather (Chagrin Falls, Ohio ) found freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo (Mount Laurel, N.J.) for her fifth goal of the season.  Just over five minutes later, freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, N.J.) tallied an unassisted goal to push the lead to 5-3.

Back-to-back goals by freshman attack Katie Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and sophomore attack Dana Perriello (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave the Ducks a four-goal advantage.  Sophomore defender/midfielder Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, N.Y.) added an unassisted goal with 19:53 remaining to put Stevens in front 8-3.

Following an unassisted goal by Kean freshman attack Joeline Bennett (Willingboro, N.J.) that brought the Cougars (3-4, 0-1 Skyline) to within 8-4, the Ducks scored seven straight goals over the final 14:37 of game action to pull away.  Mather scored three consecutive goals in the span of 4:09 at one juncture.

Lalli finished the contest with four goals to lead the Ducks.  Mather totaled three goals and three assists for a game-high six points.  Callahan had three goals.  Perriello finished with two goals and an assist.  Pigott contributed two goals, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.  Junior defender Beth Rychcik (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) added a team-high four draw controls.  Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, N.J.) picked up her fourth win of the season as she made nine saves in net for the Ducks.

Sophomore attack Stephanie Cirino (Warminster, Pa.) recorded a goal, two draw controls and a caused turnover for Kean.  Bennett led all players with five draw controls.  Senior goalkeeper Lydia Pinto (Clark, N.J.) was tagged with the loss as she allowed 12 goals while making eight saves.

Stevens owned a 33-20 advantage in shots and 11-10 edge in draw controls during the game.  The Ducks were successful on 14 of 19 clears (73.7 percent).  Kean was 10-for-16 in clearing attempts (62.5 percent).

Coming up on Wednesday, Stevens will travel to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew University at 7 p.m.
