Senior Adam Sandt tied the Stevens career hit record with two hits against Drew.

MADISON, N.J. (April 9, 2007) – Senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) tied the all-time career hit record as he finished the game 2-for-5, but Drew University used a three-run sixth inning to earn a 6-3 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team on Monday afternoon.  Sandt now has 183 hits and is tied with David Riley, who played for the Ducks from 1999-2002.  Following Monday’s loss, Stevens dropped to 11-12 on the year.

After falling behind 3-1 in the third inning, Stevens scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3.

Sandt and senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J) started the frame with back-to-back singles.  With one out, sophomore Alex Sota (Lancaster, Pa.) walked to load the bases.  After senior Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) popped out for the second out of the inning, freshman Anthony Andrews (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) and sophomore Dan Silva (Boonton Township, N.J.) drew walks to tie the score, 3-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Drew added three runs to take the lead for good.  After junior James Soldo (Chalfront, Pa.) drew a two-out walk, he advanced to second after senior Matthew Vickers (Pearl River, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch.  Senior Joe Cardinale (Roseland, N.J.) singled to right field, which scored Soldo and Vickers on a wild throw home by the Ducks’ right fielder.  With Cardinale on third, sophomore Paul Kierstead (Cape Elizabethtown, Maine) singled to total his second two-out RBI single in the game.

The Ducks and Rangers were tied at two different points during the game.  Drew scored in the first inning, but Stevens tied the score in the top of the second when Sota scored on an error by the catcher.

Drew tacked on two runs in the third inning, but Stevens came back to tie the score 3-3.

Sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) went 2-for-5 on the day with one run scored for Stevens.  Freshman Gerald DiMaso (Holmdel, N.J.) gave up two runs in 0.2 innings of work to pick up the loss for the Ducks.

Kierstead finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Rangers.  Cardinale went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Purchase, N.Y. to play Manhattanville College in a doubleheader.  The first game will begin at noon.
