WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (May 1, 2007) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped to Eastern Connecticut State University, 13-3, on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Ducks dropped to 17-18, while the Warriors improved to 28-7 overall with the win.
Eastern Connecticut used a five run first inning to set the tone in the game. With the bases loaded, junior Zack Thomas (East Haddam, Conn.) scored the Warriors first run on a wild pitch. Sophomore Tristan Hobbes (Utica, N.Y.) smacked a three-run triple to centerfield and junior Trey Bongiovanni (Meriden, Conn.) added an RBI single in the inning.
Eastern Connecticut tacked on two more runs before Stevens plated its first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J.) had an RBI double in the inning to score senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) who was walked in the beginning of the frame.
The Warriors added a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by freshman Melvin Castillo (Danbury, Conn.). Eastern Connecticut extended its lead to 13-1 with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh.
Sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI and added his team-leading sixth home run in the game. Sandt finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Birkenstock and senior Andrew Tesoriero (Dunedin, Fla.) each picked up one RBI apiece in the game.
Junior Armando Suarez (Long Valley, N.J.) suffered the loss on the mound for Stevens in two innings of work, giving up three runs on four hits.
Senior Matt Cremins (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the win for the Warriors in six innings, giving up one run on five hits.
Stevens is back in action on Thursday when it travels to Skylands Park in Augusta, N.J. to play Centenary College in the opening game of the Skyline Conference tournament. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
