ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 15, 2007) – Junior midfielder Hillary Paul notched a goal and a game-high six shots but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to Hartwick College in double overtime by a final score of 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y. This contest also served as the first Empire 8 match-up for both teams this season.

The Ducks (4-2, 0-1), who held a 19-14 shot advantage on the day, reached the scoreboard first in the final minute of the opening half when freshman forward Lauren Griggs found the inside of the cage off a feed from sophomore forward Kara Borzillo. The Hawks (3-3, 1-0) came back with a score of their own in the 44th-minute as freshman midfielder Amanda Barton (Endicott, N.Y.) pushed a ball past Stevens junior keeper Stephanie Smith to knot the match up at 1-1.

Two minutes later, Paul slid a ball through the pads of Hartwick sophomore goaltender Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead. Junior midfielder Allison Shields was credited with the assist on the play. The Hawks struck back in the 62nd-minute when sophomore forward Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.) scored off a pass from sophomore defender Jenny Murphy (Vineyard Haven, Mass.). 

After a scoreless first overtime period, Hartwick scored in the 90th-minute. Junior midfielder Danielle Greene (Woodstock, Vt.) found the back of the net off a rebound shot from freshman forward Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) to give the hosts their third win in five attempts.

Smith stopped six shots for the Ducks, while Thorpe made a game-high 11 saves for the Hawks. Stevens also registered an 18-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Jessica Reed and her squad return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Pomona, N.J. to take on Richard Stockton College. Face-off is slated for 5 p.m.
