ONEONTA, N.Y. (September 16, 2007) – On Sunday, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team moved to 8-0 on the year and 6-0 in Empire 8 play with a 7-2 victory over Hartwick College (2-3, 1-2) in Oneonta, N.Y. The Ducks took four of six singles matches and captured all three doubles flights to remain undefeated this season.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Dana Bacalla and freshman Allyson Kingman topped sophomore Betsy Breaznell (Delmar, N.Y.) and freshman Jennifer Lin (Albany, N.Y.) by the score of 8-2. Juniors Whitney Bender and Rebecca Ryba registered an 8-3 triumph over senior Lexi Andrus (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore Lauren Aquino (Loudonville, N.Y.) at second doubles. Sophomore Natalie Schloeder and freshman Kendra Appleheimer added an 8-4 victory over senior Rebecca Sarro (Newburgh, N.Y.) and freshman Christina Sorrentino (Sherrill, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles.
Bacalla opened singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Breaznell in the first flight. Bender was a straight-sets winner (6-4, 6-3) against Lin at No. 2 singles. Kingman totaled a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Aquino in the third-singles position. Appleheimer dropped a total of two games in her 6-1, 6-1 win against senior Anne Neely (Milton Mass.) at fourth singles. Ryba lost a tough three-set match to Andrus at fifth singles. In that contest, Ryba won a first-set tiebreaker (7-5) and led 5-2 in the second set, but she was unable to capitalize on four match points. Andrus rallied back to claim a 7-5 victory and went on to win a third-set pro-set (11-9) despite facing two more match points. At sixth singles, Schloeder fell to freshman Kimberly Post (Nashua, N.H.) by the score of 6-3, 7-5.
Having played five straight matches on the road, Stevens will finally return home to face Drew University on Wednesday. That contest will begin at 4 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
