HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 2, 2007) – Senior forward Mike Kaiser and senior defenseman Sean Bliss registered a goal each Saturday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex as the ninth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated fourth-ranked New York University, 2-1, in the final day of the 2007 Stevens College Classic.
This game was also a rematch of last year's sectional semifinal match in which the two teams played to a 1-1 deadlock. NYU advanced with a 3-1 victory in penalty kicks and eventually reached the national semifinals of the 2006 NCAA Division III Tournament.
In Saturday's contest, the Ducks (2-0) opened up the scoring in the second minute when Kaiser headed a shot into the left corner of the net off of a cross from junior midfielder Jeremy Lippel.
Early into the second half, Bliss quickly gave Stevens a 2-0 advantage when he ripped a shot from the top-right corner of the box into the back of the net on a feed from Lippel. Then, in the 83rd-minute, the Violets (1-1), who out-shot the Ducks by a 20-10 count on the evening, reached the scoreboard when senior midfielder Jeritt Thayer (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) headed home an Adam Dhanens (Bakersfield, Calif.) cross into the bottom right corner of the net.
Stevens freshman goaltender Zach Carr made six saves on the night while NYU junior keeper Chris Wright (Colchester, Conn.) recorded three.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue and the Ducks return to action this weekend when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to take on host SUNY Oneonta in their respective soccer tournament. The opening kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
