LEXINGTON, Va. (January 19, 2008) – Senior Brandon MacWhinnie recorded a pair of falls on Saturday afternoon to assist the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team in picking up its first-ever victories in the Centennial Conference against Washington & Lee University (44-6) and McDaniel College (33-12). The Ducks improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action. They now also own a four-game winning streak. The Generals went to 3-2 and 1-2 in league play, while the Green Terror dropped to 3-8 and 0-2 in Centennial action.
In the match-up at Washington & Lee, Stevens tallied 34 unanswered points before its opposition reached the scoreboard. Sophomore Charles Favia extended his record to 18-4 with a 14-4 decision over freshman Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md.) at 157 lbs. to open up the dual. Junior Jordan Chacon (165) and MacWhinnie followed (174) with falls against their opponents. Chacon pinned freshman Marshall Olszewski (Owings Mills, Md.) in a period of 2:40. MacWhinnie placed sophomore Eric Veres (Towson, Md.) on his back at 1:39.
In the 184-lb. weight class, freshman Justin Galati downed senior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va.) by a score of 9-3, while sophomore Ernie Guaimano notched his first win of the year versus sophomore Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md.) at 197 (9-5).
At heavyweight, sophomore James Roarty entered six points with a fall against Zak Colangelo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) at 3:37. After that, two of the final four weights ended via forfeit.
In the 133-lb. competition, the Generals got on the slate as senior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J.) pinned junior Mark Bistis in a time of 4:56. Lastly, at 141 lbs, junior Pat Conrad scored a 12-4 major decision over sophomore Sean Brusca (Rockville, Md.).
On the other hand, the McDaniel bout saw a lot of close battles. Favia earned a tight 6-3 victory against junior Zach Hetrick (Hanover, Pa.) at 157 to start the match. Leading 1-0 after two periods, Favia tallied two takedowns in the third to lock it up. Chacon continued in the 165-lb. weight class by defeating senior Corey Beall (Hagerstown, Md.), 6-2.
MacWhinnie put his second foe of the day on his back at 174 lbs. in junior Courtney Nightengale (Sublette, Kan.) at 4:42. Galati (184) followed by recording a close 6-5 win over junior Ryan Dieter (Clarksville, Md.). Then, Guaimano picked up a 7-3 decision against junior Ferris Bond (Gaithersburg, Md.) in the 197-lb. competition to clutch an 18-0 lead in the meet.
At 285, Roarty fell in a time of 3:47 to freshman Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md.), while Brisson edged out sophomore Tim Hall (Westminster, Md.), 7-6, in the 125-lb. weight class. After back-to-back pins by freshman C.J. Naper (New Windsor, Conn.) of McDaniel and Conrad, sophomore Leo Dormann wrapped up the match for Stevens by quickly recording six points from a forfeit at 149.
The Ducks return to the mat this Wednesday when they travel to Hartford, Conn. for a 6 p.m. dual-meet at Trinity College.
