HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 30, 2008) – The No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team lost a tough, 1-0 game to Montclair State University on a cold Thursday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The loss is the second at home for Stevens as they fall to 15-3 on the season. Montclair's goal came from the stick of junior captain Megan Walsh (Lumberton, N.J.) in the 48th-minute as she was able to put in a rebound off of a Melissa Buttray (Lincoln Park, N.J.) shot. The win ends Montclair's six-game losing streak.
The first half was back and forth as Montclair controlled possession but neither team had many strong scoring chances. The best chance came for Montclair after a corner, but the shot was stopped and the attempt off the rebound sailed wide. The Red Hawks ended the first half with a 4-1 advantage in shots and a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, Stevens controlled the ball and field position but could not maintain strong, quality possessions in the circle and had trouble getting good scoring chances. The Ducks held a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners in the second stanza and shots were even at four apiece, but Walsh and the Red Hawks were able to put the ball in the net at 48:17 for the win.
Montclair (9-6) ended the contest with an 8-5 advantage in shots as the Ducks ended with a 6-4 edge in corners. Sophomore Ellyn Griggs took the loss in goal for Stevens. She was credited with three saves. Emina Udrjio (West Paterson, N.J.) got the win for Montclair as the junior did not have to save one shot.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa. at Washington & Jefferson University. It is the final game of the regular season for Stevens as the winner will earn the right to host the 2008 Empire 8 Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
