HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 10, 2008) – The No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team cruised to its second-straight Empire 8 win on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The Ducks pitched their eighth shutout of 2008 as they defeated St. John Fisher College, 3-0. Stevens got goals from sophomore Nolan Sandberg, junior Terrence Johnson, and junior tri-captain Todd Sheridan in the win.
Sophomore Zach Carr was in net for his fifth shutout of 2008 and 15th of his career. He made one save but did nice job showing aggression towards the ball throughout the entire afternoon.
Stevens controlled the ball, the tempo, and field position from start to finish as the Ducks ended the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners.
Fisher goalkeeper Adam Durst played well in goal despite allowing three goals. The junior made seven saves and was able to turn away several one-on-one chances for Stevens (9-1-1 overall, 2-0 Empire 8).
The Ducks got on the board in the 18th-minute when Sandberg scored off a nice feed from freshman Peter Bednarsky. Bednarsky put a through ball down the left seam and Sandberg was able to chip in a shot over Durst.
Stevens went up 2-0 when Johnson scored his team-high ninth goal of the season at the 30:23 mark. Johnson took a long diagonal cross from senior captain Jeremy Lippel and beat his defender and the keeper.
Stevens scored its third and final goal late in the second half, but it was probably the prettiest goal of the match. Sandberg made a perfect service to the left side of goal about 10 yards out, and Sheridan was able to head the ball up and over the keeper for the score. It was Sheridan's third tally of the season.
The Stevens defense and midfield was fantastic throughout as the Cardinals could not sustain any kind of possession or pressure because of the relentless pressure they were receiving from the Ducks. Sophomore Michael Quijano, senior captain Jason Nachman, junior Josh Williams, senior Craig Moquin, and junior Chris Faustino all played solid games for the Ducks.
St. John Fisher (3-6 overall, 1-1 Empire 8), the preseason number two in the Empire 8, will play Utica College tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Stevens will take on Alfred University Sunday at the De Baun Athletic Complex beginning at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.Empire8.tv.
