SADDLE BROOK, N.J. (November 1, 2008) – The No. 27 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team lost a tight match to No. 20 Roger Williams, 21-15 on Saturday afternoon at the Premier Club in Saddle Brook, N.J. The Ducks came back from a 14-6 deficit to take a 15-14 lead with two matches remaining but dropped the final two bouts as Roger Williams was able to pull out the six-point victory. Senior captain Mark Bistis won his match by pin fall in the opening period as he recorded the first individual win of the season for the Ducks.
At 125 lbs., junior Frank Maselli lost 10-3 to Roger Williams' (1-0) Jeremiah Mahoney (Madison, Conn.) as Mahoney scored six of the first eight points in the match. Bistis' win by fall came in the 133-lb. weight class as he pinned Michael Trayser (Dublin, Ohio) at 1:46 after taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Bistis' win put the Ducks (0-1) up 6-3 but RWU's Andrew Hawley (Huntington, Mass.) won a close, 5-3 decision over Robert W. Bolomey III. Hawley scored four of his five points in the first period as Bolomey just was not able to get over the hump.
Thomas Tumenelli (Howell, N.J.) beat senior captain Pat Conrad 10-2 at 149 lbs. as Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) defeated junior Leo Dormann 13-2 in the 157-lb. weight class to give Roger Williams a 14-6 lead.
Stevens came back to win the next three matches to take its 15-14 lead. The comeback began when rookie Joe Favia won his collegiate debut over Daniel Zottollo (Paramus, N.J.), 7-3. Favia recorded a takedown and a reversal in the final period to seal the win. Rookie Ryan Dormann also won his first career match as he came out on top in a tight, 8-7 decision over Jared Cznarski (Shelton, Conn.) at 174 lbs.
Sophomore Vincent Termini won a great, hard-fought match at 184 lbs. over James Woods (Demarest, N.J.). He won by a 6-5 decision as riding time put him on top.
Daniel Woods (Demarest, N.J.) won a 5-0 decision over junior Ernie Guaimano at 197 lbs., and Zachary Weinreich (Newton, N.J.) defeated Valentin Riazanov by major decision at 285 lbs., 11-3.
Stevens was without three regulars but competed and wrestled well against a solid Roger Williams squad. The Ducks will return to action next Sunday when they host Yeshiva University at 3 p.m. in Walker Gymnasium.
