Women's Soccer Suffers Tough 4-0 Loss to Ithaca in Semifinal of Empire 8 Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. (November 8, 2008) - The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fought hard against a staunch Ithaca College squad as the pair squared off in the semifinal round of the 2008 Empire 8 championship in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bombers took down the Ducks 4-0 as Ithaca advances to the championship round scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. With today's loss the Ducks fall to 12-5-2.

Just 40 seconds into the first half, Ithaca got things going early as junior forward Winnie Adrien (Blair, N.J.) connected with junior midfielder/forward Amy Scheffer (Schalmont, N.Y.) for Scheffer's 11th goal of the season. The Bombers took a 1-0 advantage when Adrien crossed the ball from right to left inside the box to find a sliding Scheffer, who tucked the ball inside the left post.

At the 21-minute mark, senior midfielder/back Nikki Rice (Sutton, Mass.) had a nice individual effort to poke the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Jenn Pontier for her 13th score of the season. At the half, the Bombers led in shots (12-4) and corners (5-2).

As 1:40 expired in the second half, senior forward Chelsey Feldman (Hewlett, N.Y.) tallied her 14th goal of the season off the foot of junior midfielder/forward Liz Mascucci (New Providence, N.J.). Mascucci found Feldman about 12 yards out in front of the net as Feldman ripped a shot that landed inside of the net just under the cross bar.

With less than 25 seconds to play in regulation, Ithaca tallied its fourth score of the game off an unassisted score by Scheffer. Her second goal of the game was an intercepted a clearing attempt and took a shot from around 30 yards out that went in under the cross bar.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Sotomayor (East Brunswick, N.J.) played all 90 minutes in goal and was credited with the win (12-2-2) for having pulled in five saves. Pontier was handed the loss having allowed the first three goals for her 49:29 minutes of action. Freshman Kaitlin McClymont came in and finished out the contest as she rendered a score and gathered a save. Overall, Stevens was out-shot and out-cornered 24-12 and 8-3, respectively.

Stevens with await a bid for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship scheduled for the weekend of November 15.
