Wrestling Goes 2-1 in Florida Citrus Duals to Cap Solid Winter Break Trip

LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA, Fla. (December 30, 2008) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team closed its trip south with a solid, 2-1 performance in the Florida Citrus Duals on Tuesday in Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla. The Ducks opened the day by defeating Simpson College, 29-11. No. 10 Cornell College (Iowa) then defeated Stevens 43-7 in the second match, but the Ducks responded by defeating Washington & Jefferson College, 38-11. The 2-1 performance improves the Ducks to 3-5 on the season in duals as junior heavyweight James Roarty led the way for Stevens by going 3-0.

In addition to Roarty's big day, senior captain Mark Bistis went 2-0 with two pins at 133 lbs. and rookie Joey Favia came off his impressive individual title at the Florida Citrus Tournament with a 2-0 day at 165 lbs. Senior Jordan Chacon went 2-0 in the 174-lb. weight class and sophomore Bobby Bishop was 1-0 at 165 lbs.

“I was really pleased with the way we performed in Florida,” Head Wrestling Coach Mike Clayton said. “I felt we stepped up our mental and physical toughness on the mats, and it really showed in our results.”

Complete results from the day will be posted when they become available. The Ducks will return to action when they host Elizabethtown College on January 10, 2009 in Walker Gymnasium. The dual is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
