HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 3, 2008) – After leading 11-8 through the first two rounds, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team dropped the match as it posted a 1-7 decision in the final round on Sunday at Walker Gymnasium in Hoboken, N.J. Sacred Heart University took advantage of the lost momentum and earned the 15-12 victory over the Ducks (7-4).
Entering the third and final round Stevens needed just three bouts to claim the victory over the Pioneers. The epee squad, which posted a flawless 6-0 record through the first two rounds, had a setback as it went 1-2 in the third round. Junior Rachel Cannell went 3-0 in her bouts and sits with a 25-2 record on the season thus far. Senior Emily Freier and sophomore Alexis Sowuleski each registered 2-1 marks on the day.
In foil, senior captain Natalia Chabebe had a solid performance as she finished 2-1 at the competition. The foil team (4-5) dropped three bouts in the final round that helped the Pioneers edge out the win. The sabre squad had a rough day as it went 1-8 during its bouts.
Stevens will return to action next Sunday when it competes in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference team event, which is scheduled to take place on the campus of Drew University in Madison, N.J. at 10 a.m.
