Wrestling Beats Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins at USMMA Quad

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (February 9, 2008) – On Saturday afternoon, the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team put together a strong performance as it defeated Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University in Centennial Conference action by scores of 43-6 and 23-15, respectively. With the wins, the Ducks finished out the regular season with an overall record of 10-2 and a league mark of 6-1. The Bullets went to 2-13 and 1-6 on the year, while the Blue Jays dropped to 5-10 and 4-3.

Stevens opened up the in the Gettysburg dual by taking a commanding 18-0 lead after the first three weights. Sophomore Kyle Brisson won by forfeit in the 125-lb. competition. Junior Mark Bistis recorded a fall (3:16) over freshman Jack Bostrom (Duxbury, Mass.) at 133 lbs. Junior Pat Conrad pinned junior Richard Masella (Little Silver, N.J.) in a time of 2:13 at 141.

After senior Matt Shank (Reedsville, Pa.) got the Bullets on the scoreboard in the 149-lb. weight class with a 9-3 decision against sophomore Leo Dormann, sophomore Charles Favia picked up another six team points for the Ducks with a forfeit.

Gettysburg got its only other win on the day at 165 lbs as sophomore Patrick Doherty (Garden City, N.Y.) downed junior Jordan Chacon, 6-3. Then, at 174, senior Brandon MacWhinnie scored a fall (2:32) over freshman D.J. Neri (Fairfax, Va.).

Freshman James Ray notched his first major decision of the season in the 184-lb. competition by downing freshman Drew Wolenter (Norristown, Pa.), 12-4. Freshman Justin Galati contributed a pin at 197 lbs against freshman Ben Cutrell (Marion, Mass.). Sophomore James Roarty finished the match with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over freshman Robert Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at heavyweight.

The Ducks got off to a fast start again in the contest against Johns Hopkins. Brisson got a 7-4 decision over freshman Akshay Paintal (Lexington, Mass.) in the 125-lb. weight class. Bistis majored (14-2) freshman Xavier Mohammad (Clarkesville, Md.) at 133 lbs, while Conrad narrowly defeated freshman Ben Kauffman (Phoenix, Ariz.) at 141.

Following a 7-1 loss by Dormann to senior Jim Crumlish (Blue Bell, Pa.) in the 149-lb. competition, Favia collected a 14-5 major decision at 157 lbs against freshman Eric Levenseller (Tabernacle, N.J.) to grab a 13-3 advantage halfway through the match. Freshman Patrick Stanley (Isle of Palms, S.C.) cut the Blue Jay deficit to seven with a 5-3 win over Chacon at 165.

MacWhinnie (174) picked up his second fall on the afternoon against sophomore Kyle Keane (West Islip, N.Y.) in a time of 1:00. Subsequent to a pair of defeats from Ray (184) and Galati (197), Roarty won a close 3-2 decision against junior Matt Rugani (Bronxville, N.Y.) to close out the bout.

Head Coach Mike Clayton and his squad return to the mat on February 23 when they travel to Collegeville, Pa. to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships. The winner of each weight class will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
