Lee Comes up Big as Men's Tennis Defeats Carthage, 5-4

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 16, 2008) – Freshman Jay Lee earned the clinching point with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win over sophomore Andy Schwenke (Mukwonago, Wis.) at fifth singles as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened its spring trip with a 5-4 victory over Carthage College on Sunday in Orlando, Fla. The Ducks also received singles victories from freshman Jason Ringstad and junior Kobe Attias as they improved to 2-3 on the year. The Red Men are now 4-5.

At first doubles, senior Ricky Bawa and sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz lost an 8-2 match to senior Miguel Yunes (Villahermosa Tabasco, Mexico) and junior Sergio Lopez (Culiacan Sinaloa, Mexico). Freshman Zhi Wei Ko teamed up with Lee for an 8-4 win over sophomores Jack Schiro (Shorewood, Wis.) and J.T. Delk (Wheaton, Ill.) at second doubles. Stevens also won at No. 3 doubles as freshman Carlo Pardo and Ringstad defeated freshman Dan Gerber (Onalaska, Wis.) and Schwenke by the score of 8-0.

Yunes dropped the first set then rallied to post a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Ko at first singles. Bawa lost a tough three-set match to Schiro, who prevailed by the score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. In the third-singles position, Lopez topped Rusinkiewicz in straight-sets (6-2, 6-3). Ringstad rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Delk at fourth singles. Right before Lee out-lasted Schwenke at fifth singles, Attias posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Gerber in the sixth flight.

Stevens will continue its spring trip on Tuesday when it plays a pair of matches. First, the Ducks will take on the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse at 8 a.m. Stevens will then face Connecticut College at 4 p.m.
