Baseball Falls to William Paterson by an 11-0 Count

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 16, 2008) – Senior catcher David Katusa went 2-for-4 with a double as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to William Paterson University on Wednesday night in Hoboken, N.J. The Pioneers posted 11 runs on 15 hits as the Ducks were held scoreless and totaled six hits. Stevens falls to 6-19 on the season as William Paterson improves to 21-9 overall.

After two scoreless innings, the Pioneers posted five runs in the top of the third. Senior infielder Anthony Perrone (Midland Park, N.J.) plated a pair of runners off a single to left field. Senior outfielder Vince Joyce (Franklin, N.J.) drove in junior infielder Will Couter (Roseland, N.J.) when he singled to right field. Sophomore outfielder Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior outfielder John Elia (Emerson, N.J.) also registered an RBI each in the inning.

William Paterson added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth off a two-run blast to right centerfield by Couter, his first of the season. In the top of the sixth, sophomore outfielder Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) recorded his seventh homer of the year with a two-run shot to right center. Sophomore outfielder Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, N.J.) and freshman infielder Frank Franco (Wayne, N.J.) both added RBI to increase the Pioneers lead to 11-0.

Freshman pitcher Kyle Schlemm (Secaucus, N.J.) recorded his second win of the season as he pitched a nine-inning complete-game shutout. He allowed six hits and struck out six batters. Courter finished the night having gone 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Joyce went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as Perrone batted 2-for-3 with a run scored a pair of RBI.

For the Ducks, freshman outfielder Matt Glassman went 2-for-4, while freshman catcher Denis Ackermann batted 1-for-4 in the loss. The only other hit came off the bat of sophomore infielder Eddie Daniele, as he went 1-for-3 on the night. Senior pitcher Scott Picerno was tagged with the loss (0-7) for his four innings of work. He gave up 10 hits and six earned runs. Freshman pitcher Kyle Hanas had a solid two innings not allowing any hits during his six batters faced.

Stevens will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
