Men's Tennis Secures Top Seed for Empire 8 Tournament With 9-0 Rout of Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 19, 2008) – On Saturday afternoon, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team earned the No. 1 seed for the Empire 8 Tournament by recording a 9-0 win against Alfred University at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. With the victory, the Ducks remain undefeated in conference action with a 7-0 mark. They are also 12-6 overall. As for the Saxons, they dropped to 8-6 and 3-4 in league matches.

At first doubles, senior Ricky Bawa and sophomore Piotr Rusinkiewicz won an 8-5 decision versus freshmen Gary Kwiecien (Perry, N.Y.) and Nick Schneider (Liverpool, N.Y.). In the second flight, freshman Connor Houghton (Orleans, Mass.) and junior Nick Middaugh (Belmont, N.Y.) were beat by freshmen Zhi Wei Ko and Arik Zeevy by the score of 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Jason Ringstad and Jay Lee upended freshmen Andrew Carucci (Olean, N.Y.) and Ryan Parlia (Valley Stream, N.Y.), 8-0.

In the first-singles position, Ko topped Houghton by a 6-1, 6-0 count. Zeevy earned a 6-0, 6-4 win against Kwiecien at No. 2 singles. Bawa beat Schneider by identical 6-2 scores at third singles. Rusinkiewicz was a straight-sets victor at the fourth-singles position by defeating Middaugh 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Lee picked up his 10th-straight win with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Carucci. Lastly, at sixth singles, Ringstad lost just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over senior Rob Festa (Fairport, N.Y.).

Stevens returns to action when it wraps up the regular season in Hoboken against Empire 8 opponent St. John Fisher College. First serve is scheduled for noon.
