HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 2, 2008) – Freshman midfielder Pamela Loria registered four goals and three draw controls on Wednesday afternoon to assist the 19th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a 20-3 victory over Hartwick College at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks scored 10 goals in each half to propel themselves to their eighth win in as many games.
Sophomore attacker Alyssa Pigott also had four goals, while senior attacker Liz Mather dished out a game-high five assists. Freshman attacker Michelle Buonacuore notched three goals, three assists and two ground balls. Freshman attacker Leah Wasserman had two goals and two assists for four points. She also picked up a ground ball and a draw control.
Freshman midfielder Christine Smith amassed two goals and four ground balls. Sophomore attacker Katie Lalli earned two goals and an assist. Freshman defender/midfielder Kate Cox totaled four ground balls and two caused turnovers for Stevens (8-0, 4-0 Empire 8).
Senior midfielder Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, N.Y.) led Hartwick (2-5, 0-2 Empire 8) with two goals, two draws and four ground balls. Freshman attacker Tiffany Bishop (Shoreham, Vt.) contributed a goal, two draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore attacker Stephanie Nutt (Shirley, N.Y.) added an assist.
Tied at 1-1 with 25-plus minutes to go in the first half, the Ducks rattled off eight straight goals to take a 9-1 lead with 6:10 remaining. Pigott, Buonacuore and Loria all had two goals in the run. Mather and Wasserman each posted two assists. For the Hawks, Bishop tried to start up a rally with 5:38 left as she scored on an unassisted effort. But, it was to no avail as Loria picked up a hat trick with 1:10 to go, which sent Stevens into the locker room ahead by a 10-2 score.
In the second half, the Ducks showed no signs of letting up as they registered the first nine goals of the period to grab hold of a 19-2 lead with 4:45 left in the game. Pigott had back-to-back unassisted goals at the 14:45 and 13:37 marks, respectively. Mather credited another three assists to her resume, while Buonacuore collected a goal and an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Danielle DePerno (Cortland, N.Y.) stopped 15 shots for the Hawks, while senior goaltender Stephanie Linder and junior netminder Grace Sack combined to make 12 saves for the Ducks.
Stevens held a 53-17 advantage in shots, 26-14 margin in ground balls and a 15-8 edge in draw controls. It was also a perfect 15-of-15 (100.0 percent) on its clearing attempts. As for Hartwick, it converted 63.6 percent (14-of-22) of its clears. The Hawks also turned the ball over a total of 25 times to 13 for the Ducks.
Stevens returns to the field this Saturday for a 1 p.m. opening draw against Montclair State University at the De Baun Athletic Complex. All fans are encouraged to wear black in support of Duck Country. The game will be carried live at www.Empire8.tv. It is also a re-match of last year's Skyline Conference Championship game, where the Red Hawks beat the Ducks by a final score of 13-6 in Montclair, N.J.
