DAY 1
Frostburg St. def. Gallaudet (25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 15-8)
The Bobcats of Frostburg came out firing as they jumped ahead a pair of games early off an offensive attack led by junior outside hitter Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md.), who totaled 18 kills, six digs and four blocks. Gallaudet would not back down quietly as they responded with wins in Game 3 and 4. Junior middle hitter Justine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) registered 14 kills, 11 digs and a block solo.
Frostburg jumped ahead quickly in the final game as the score read 8-1 before the switch. Freshman setter Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa.) dished out 46 assists and added five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md.) tallied 12 kills, six digs and a block in the victory.
Gallaudet was also led by senior middle hitter Katelyn Reese (San Jose, Calif.), who registered seven kills, five blocks, three digs and a pair of assists. Freshman setter Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) connected on 41 assists and finished with 15 digs and 10 kills.
Haverford def. Stevens (26-24, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16)
The 20th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2008 Ducks Classic as it fell to No. 19 Haverford College 24-26, 19-25, 25-20, 16-25. The loss marks the first defeat in 24 matches dating back to the 2006 season when the Ducks fell to then eighth-ranked New York University in a three-game match on September 13. With the defeat, Stevens falls to 5-3 on the year.
The Fords took a two-game advantage fueled by an offensive stand from junior outside hitters Rebecca Salvo (La Canada, Calif.) and Rachel Salvo (La Canada, Calif.). The twin-sister combination dominated the court as Rebecca landed 15 kills, 17 digs and a pair of blocks, while Rachel posted 20 kills and 13 digs. Defensively for Haverford, sophomore Kelsey Cantwell (Newport News, Va.) led with 16 digs and added six kills and two blocks. With the win the Fords improve to 8-2 on the year.
The Ducks were led by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Byrne, who landed 21 kills and added 12 digs and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Summer Hamilton chipped in with nine kills and tallied three blocks. Sophomore setter Sara Budar totaled 36 assists, 19 digs and nine assists.
Frostburg St. def. MIT (25-19, 25-18, 25-14)
After having battled it out against Gallaudet in five, the Bobcats kept their momentum rolling as they swiped three games from MIT. Frostburg was led by Winterling, who amassed 12 kills, seven digs and two aces. Carrington was true to form as she dished out 34 assists and added three digs. Stephens added to the offensive artillery as she recorded 11 kills, four digs and a pair of blocks. The Bobcats finished Day 1 of the tournament with a pair of wins as they move to 11-1 on the year.
Junior right-side hitter Katrina Ellison (Westport, Conn.) led MIT with seven kills, three digs and a block. Junior middle hitter Barden Cleeland (Irvine, Calif.) registered six kills, while senior libero Lindsay Hunting (West Chester, Pa.) accumulated eight digs and a service ace in the loss. The Engineers fall to 5-2 on the season.
Johns Hopkins def. Gallaudet (25-22, 26-24, 25-21)
Hopkins took no time to get in a groove as they took down the Bisons 3-0 in their opening match of the tournament. The Blue Jays were led by junior outside hitter Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, Md.), who recorded 14 kills and 13 digs. Junior middle blocker Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 12 kills, while senior setter Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, Texas) connected on 36 assists and posted eight kills, six digs and an ace in the win.
For the Bisons, senior middle hitter Ludmila Mounty-Weinstock (Takoma Park, Md.) accumulated seven kills, six digs and an ace. Reese finished the day with five blocks, four kills, two digs and a pair of aces. Johnson tallied 24 assists and chipped in with five digs, three blocks and two kills. Gallaudet drops to 5-6 on the year with its 0-2 outing at Day 1 of tournament play.
Haverford def. MIT (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14)
The Salvo sisters did not need much time off as they got things rolling for Haverford offensively in the 3-1 win over the Engineers. Rebecca landed 14 kills and 12 digs as Rachel followed suit with nine kills and nine digs en route to a 2-0 day. Sophomore outside hitter Franny Glick (Yorklyn, Del.) chipped in with 10 digs and nine kills in the victory. The 19th-ranked Fords went 2-0 on the day and run their record to 9-2 on the year.
For MIT, junior outside hitter Alex May (Des Moines, Iowa) led the squad with 17 kills and accumulated 11 digs. Junior setter Cathy Melnikow (Yorkville, N.Y.) dished out 26 assists and recorded 11 digs and an ace. Hunting controlled the defense end as she amassed 12 digs. MIT is now 5-3 on the season, having lost its third-straight match.
Stevens def. Johns Hopkins (21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 15-12)
The 20th-ranked Ducks overcame a 2-1 deficit and fought off match point four different times to tie the match at 2-all. Stevens earned tough points on strong defense to take Game 5. Byrne led the way with 18 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Melanie Volk had a stellar outing as she tallied 11 kills, nine digs and a pair of blocks. Hamilton led in blocks (5) as she added seven kills in the win.
The Blue Jays were headed by sophomore outside hitter Katie Kings (Pensacola, Fla.), who had 14 kills and eight digs. Cappelaere amassed 17 digs and 13 kills, while Lewis connected on 43 assists and finished with six digs and three blocks. Johns Hopkins also went 1-1 on the day as its overall record is now 8-2.
DAY 2
Stevens def. Gallaudet (20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23)
With the match tied at a game apiece, sophomore setter Kaitlyn Taylor rattled off a pair of service aces during a 6-0 run in favor of the Ducks to pull out Game 3 by a 26-24 decision. Byrne once again was true to form as she landed 15 kills and posted 10 digs and three blocks. Volk added to the offensive attack with her eight kills as she added 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Laura Johnson chipped in with nine kills and a block. The Ducks are now 7-3 on the year.
For Gallaudet (5-7), Jeter supplied the offensive power for the Bisons having notched 14 kills, four digs and a block. Junior outside hitter Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) followed suit with her 13 kills, five digs and service ace, while Reese finished the match with six kills, three digs and four blocks.
Haverford def. Frostburg St. (25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-12)
Both squads entered the day with a flawless 2-0 mark at the 2008 Ducks Classic. From the get go you could sense it was going to be a well played match as Haverford took games one, three and finally the fifth. The 19th-ranked Fords were led by the Salvo sisters as Rebecca accumulated 19 kills, 26 digs and three blocks. Rachel totaled 22 digs, 11 kill and an assist in the win. Cantwell had a solid performance as she amassed 15 digs, eight kills and eight blocks. Haverford is now 10-2 on the year.
Frostburg (11-2), led by Winterling had its four-match win streak snapped with the loss to the Fords. The Bobcats only other setback was against Eastern on September 6 when they fell in three-straight games. Winterling tallied 24 kills, 10 digs and three blocks in the loss to the Fords. Stephens was stellar with her 16 kills, 13 digs and an ace. Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md.) led the team defensively with 28 digs and finished the match with six kills, four assists and a block.
Haverford def. Gallaudet (25-19, 25-18, 25-15)
The Fords came away with their fourth victory of the tournament as they have now won six matches in a row. Rachel Salvo led the team in kills (10) and registered 10 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces. Rebecca Salvo landed nine kills, two blocks and an ace in the win. Glick chipped in with six kills, eight digs, four blocks and an assist as Haverford walks away with a 11-2 record on the year. The Bisons fall to 5-8 on the season.

Johns Hopkins def. MIT (25-19, 25-22, 31-29)
The Blue Jays started Day 2 of the Ducks Classic with a 3-0 win over the Engineers. Overall Johns Hopkins is 2-1 at the 2008 Ducks Classic. In the win over MIT, senior opposite hitter Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, Calif.) led the team in kills (11) and added 13 digs and four aces. Cappelaere was second with six kills as she finished the match with 10 digs and a pair of blocks. Lewis dished out 23 assists, three kills and three blocks to help the Blue Jays (9-2) top the Engineers (5-4).

Stevens def. MIT (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-9)
Volk led the team in kills (14) and produced a .344 hitting percentage on 32 attempts and only three errors to help lift the Ducks to its third win at the tournament. Byrne recorded 11 kills and 13 digs as Budar connected on 19 assists and added six digs. Hamilton notched a .308 hitting percentage on seven kills. Defensively, sophomore outside hitter Julia Reilly finished with 13 digs.
MIT was led by May, who totaled 14 kills and 11 digs as the Engineers garnered an 0-4 ledger at this year's tournament. Hunting notched 21 digs, while junior middle hitter Barden Cleeland (Irvine, Calif.) tallied 10 kills and three digs. MIT walks away with a 5-5 overall mark on the 2008 season.
