Women's Tennis Sweeps Utica 9-0 in Conference Matchup

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 13, 2008) – Sophomore Allyson Kingman earned her fifth-straight singles win in style as she defeated Nichole Rodriguez (Jamestown, N.Y.) of Utica College in flawless straight sets to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team to is second Empire 8 victory. With the 9-0 win against the Pioneers, the Ducks improve to 3-2 overall with a 2-2 league ledger, while Utica falls to 0-2.

Stevens produced its third straight 3-0 ledger in doubles play as the combination of senior Whitney Bender and Kingman walked away with a 8-1 victory against Rodriguez and senior Mercy Tomy (New Hartford, N.Y.) at first doubles. The freshman-sophomore tandem of Nicole Portner and Kendra Appleheimer recorded an 8-1 win over senior Juanita Fuentes (Utica, N.Y.) and sophomore Johanna Jennings (Kirkwood, N.Y.) at No.2 doubles. Junior Natalia Schloeder and freshman Morgan Scalzi upended junior Lien Vu (Utica, N.Y.) and freshman Carly Woodhouse (Waterville, N.Y.) by an 8-1 decision at third doubles.

All of the Ducks won in straight sets as Bender started things off win a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fuentes at No. 1 singles. Kingman dominated Rodriguez 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, while Portner posted her fourth win of the season (4-1) at No. 3 singles when she topped Tomy 6-0, 6-2.

Appleheimer defeated Jennings 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles as first-year contributor Mine Bese defeated freshman Chorney Prowl (Kunkletown, Pa.) by a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles. Scalzi closed the door on freshman Deirdre Warren (Bronx, N.Y.) on a flawless 6-0, 6-0 count to land her fourth win of her collegiate career.

The Ducks will be back and action on Sunday when they host Empire 8 foe Hartwick College at the Stevens Tennis Courts. Match time is scheduled for a noon start. In case of inclement weather the match will be moved to the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J.
