POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (September 17, 2008) – The No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Vassar College, 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Stevens scored all three goals in the first half as the Ducks bounced back nicely from their only loss of 2008. Sophomore Zach Carr was in net for the shutout, and five different Ducks recorded points in the win.
Stevens (6-1) got its first goal from sophomore Bryan De Faria just over six minutes into the game off of an assist from junior Terrence Johnson. It was De Faria's first goal of the season and first of his career.
Stevens controlled the ball and field before striking again 19:36 later. After a scramble in front of the goal, sophomore Nolan Sandberg gathered the ball just inside the 18-yard box and put a perfectly placed shot into the right corner of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Sandberg after recording a team-high four assists in the previous six games.
The Ducks scored their third goal of the half a little more than three minutes later. Sandberg was again making a run towards the goal, but the sophomore was pushed down just outside the box to set up an indirect kick. Senior Craig Moquin rolled the ball to the right on the ensuing restart which allowed Peter Montalvo to pound a low, hard shot past the Vassar (2-1) goalkeeper.
The Ducks out-shot the Brewers 10-4 in the first half and 21-9 for the game. Each squad took five corners overall, but Stevens held a 5-2 advantage after the first stanza.
Carr made four saves in goal and improves his personal record to 6-1. The sophomore now has 13 shutouts in his career.
Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Jake London (Albany, N.Y.) split time in net for Vassar as the duo combined to make a total of nine saves.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday evening at Manhattanville College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
