Kingman Picks Up Eighth-Straight Singles Win as Women's Tennis Defeats Alfred 7-2

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 20, 2008) – Sophomore Allyson Kingman earned her eighth straight singles win (8-0) Saturday afternoon as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team took down Alfred University 7-2 in league play. The Ducks move to 6-2 on the year and 4-2 in Empire 8 action, while the Cardinals fall to 4-4, 1-3. Stevens has been undefeated at home and is riding a six-game win-streak.

The Ducks had their first setback in doubles play through six-straight matches when freshman-senior combination of Griffin Currie (Erie, Pa.) and Elana Lewis (East Greenbush, N.Y.) took down senior Whitney Bender and Kingman 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. The sophomore tandem of Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Nicole Portner defeated sophomore Autumn McLain (Oneida, N.Y.) and junior Holly Seidewand (Webster, N.Y.) by a 8-3 decision at second doubles. The freshman team of Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese upended firs-year players Sarah Foster (Adelaide, Australia) and Hannah Barley (Oneida, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles.

Singles action was led off by Bender, who took care of Currie by a 7-5, 6-2 count at first singles. Kingman buried Foster in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to earn her eighth-straight victory at No. 2 singles. Portner took down McLain 6-4, 6-1 at third singles, while Seideward took the only singles match from the Ducks when she defeated Bese 6-4, 6-0. At. No. 5 singles, Appleheimer blew by Lewis by 6-0, 6-0 as Scalzi upended sophomore Kate Cohen (Bradford, Pa.) at final singles play.

Stevens will be back in action for a non conference match up against Rutgers-Newark Wednesday at 4:30 in Newark, N.J. before the Ducks compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships next weekend.
