HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 27, 2008) – The nation's longest home unbeaten streak was ended on Saturday as the Ithaca College Bombers defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team 2-0 at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. After a scoreless first half, Ithaca's Amy Scheffer (Schalmont, N.Y.) scored the game-winner 2:15 into the second stanza. The loss for Stevens marks the end to its remarkable 44-game home unbeaten streak.
In the scoreless first half, each team had one very solid opportunity. The first came for Ithaca in the 17th-minute. Junior forward Winnie Adrien (Blair, N.J.) got free and ripped a shot passed Stevens keeper Jenn Pontier. The shot hit square off the post and bounced to Chelsey Feldman (Hewlett, N.Y.) who put in the rebound. However, Feldman was offside and the goal was taken away.
Stevens' chance came on a free kick in the 38th-minute. Junior Kate Stewart crossed from left to right on the free kick, and freshman Heather Goldberg got a foot on it but her shot sailed slightly high and wide.
Ithaca came out strong in the second half and did not waste any time scoring. Scheffer, a junior, tucked a free kick from 24-yards out into the right corner of the net at the 47:15 mark. Then, at 60:41, Feldman was able to capitalize on a breakaway opportunity. Adrien brought it into the left of the box, crossed to Feldman who was wide open for the score. It was her team-high seventh goal of the season.
The Ducks had several solid chances but could not sustain much pressure in the game's final minutes as Ithaca was able to hang on for the shutout.
Stevens took eight shots, putting two on goal. Ithaca took a total of 20 shots, 14 of which were on goal. Sophomore Alyssa Sotomayor (East Burnswick, N.J.) was in net for the Bombers, and she was credited with two saves. Pontier took the loss for the Ducks as the second-year keeper made a season-high 12 saves.
Ithaca (5-1-1 overall, 2-0 Empire 8) also had a 5-1 advantage in corners.
Stevens (5-2-1 overall, 1-1 Empire 8) will hit the road for a five-game road trip that begins Wednesday at Drew University. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
