WEST POINT, N.Y. (January 19, 2009) – Freshman sabriest Krista Sticco went 3-0 against Army to help the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team edge out a win (14-13) over the Black Knights at the Army Open in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday. Sticco came off the bench to replace two starters and went 14-2 on the day as the Ducks posted a win against Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University (18-9). They also took on the likes of Division II opponents; the University Detroit and Queens College to earn a pair of victories, both by 26-6 outcomes. Stevens also earned two more victories over the City College of New York (18-9) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (24-3). The Ducks stand at 7-1 in dual performances, after their flawless outing yesterday.
The sabre team had a great day for Stevens. Senior Laura Sodon went 16-2, while junior Erica Mondadori posted a 13-3 showing. The epee squad of senior Rachel Cannell, sophomore Meagan Ritter and senior Sureen Roslan were key components to the success of the team. Cannell went 14-3, while Ritter, who is in her first year as a started posted a 13-2 mark. Roslan finished up having gone 11-5 at the Open.
In foil, senior Khairun Nisa Aziz led the way having registered a 14-4 outing. First-year fencer Alexandra Lyons went 9-5 as Danielle Bisson returned to action after a leave and finished 6-8.
“Today was a great performance for our team after having so much time off from our last competition,” said Head Coach Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. “The sabre came together and rose to the occasion after we lost two talented starters. The epee team was just as good; there are new faces in the lineup that have provided excellent strength as well,” added Vollkommer-Lynch.
Stevens will host its alumnae match on Sunday and will return to team competition at the University of New Hampshire Invite on February 1 at 9 a.m.
