Women's Tennis Cruises to Win Over Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (October 10, 2009) – Despite missing regular starters Brooke Catanzano and Alexandra Handel, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team did not drop a single game in its dual-match against Empire 8 rival Utica College, downing the Pioneers, 9-0. Stevens, having won nine of its last 10 matches, is now 9-2 on the season with a 6-1 league ledger, while Utica falls to 0-6 overall on the year and 0-6 in conference action.

Stevens' sophomore Mine Bese and senior co-captain Natalie Schloeder recorded the day's first win with an 8-0 triumph in No. 3 doubles over Utica's Nives Vujanic (Utica, N.Y.) and Stephanie Williamson before sophomore Morgan Scalzi and junior Kendra Appleheimer followed suit with an 8-0 victory in No. 2 doubles. Junior Allyson Kingman and sophomore Nicole Portner would finish off the doubles sweep downing Jennifer Persio (Cheshire, Conn.) and Jessica Ira Srp (Fleischmanns, N.Y.), 8-0, in No. 1 doubles action.

Ducks freshman Victoria Tran then captured her second singles victory of the year with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Uliziimaa Erdene in sixth-flight singles before Appleheimer and Kingman recorded 6-0, 6-0 sweeps of their own in fourth and first-flight singles, respectively. Portner would then cruise to a 6-0, 6-0, win over Srp in second-flight singles before Bese and Scalzi finished off the Pioneers with 6-0, 6-0, victories in third and fifth-flight singles, respectively.

Stevens returns to action on October 11 with a match-up against Hartwick College slated for 1 p.m.
