WAYNE, N.J. (October 14, 2009) – Despite advantages in shots and penalty corners, the No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team was shutout by William Paterson University, 2-0, on Wednesday night in Wayne, N.J. Senior Christina Ayusa (Runnemede, N.J.) scored the game-winner 7:15 into the second half, and Stevens was unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way. The loss drops the Ducks to 10-3 overall as WPU improves to 7-7. Senior Chelsea Winkelspecht (Sicklerville, N.J.) added an insurance goal for the Pioneers with 8:31 to play.
Stevens ended the contest with a 7-5 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in corners as the Ducks controlled the ball and field position for more than 60 percent of the action.
Junior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs made two saves in the loss as senior Christina Auger (Wayne, N.J.) pitched the shutout in goal for William Paterson.
Ayusa's goal came off of a corner and a pass from junior Jennie Hara (Washington Township, N.J.) and came at the 42:15 mark. Winkelspecht's tally occurred almost 20 minutes later on a loose ball in front of the net.
Sophomore Mallory Swanson and junior Lauren Griggs both played well for Stevens and defender Elizabeth Zmijewski made a gorgeous defensive save midway through the first half to keep the game scoreless.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwick College. The Ducks will be looking for the first win in Oneonta, N.Y. in program history. They will then take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon.
