ITHACA, N.Y. (October 3, 2009) – The No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team continued its winning ways on Saturday as the Ducks defeated Empire 8 rival Ithaca College, 2-0. Junior Lauren Griggs and sophomore Mallory Swanson scored the Stevens goals, and senior midfielder Jessica Ablonczy recorded both assists. The win is the seventh straight for the Ducks, who are now 9-1 overall, 2-0 in the conference, and have not dropped an Empire 8 game since 2007 (8-0).
Stevens, who defeated Ithaca (2-7 overall, 0-2 Empire 8) in an Empire 8 Tournament semifinal in 2008, controlled the game from beginning to end. The Ducks held Ithaca without a shot for the entire first half while taking five of their own and took six penalty corners compared to just one by the Bombers. However, the two teams remained tied till very late in the game.
In the 63rd minute, the Ducks got a penalty corner and were finally able to capitalize. The ball was loose in front on the cage, Ablonczy warded off a defender to get control and then slipped to Griggs for the score. It was her second tally of the season and first game-winner.
Stevens, which started the season slow converting corners into goals, got its second goal directly off of the set play just 1:02 after the first was scored. Senior Erin Broderick hit out to Ablonczy who was able to set up Swanson for the goal. It was Swanson's team-high seventh of the year and Ablonczy's third assist.
Junior Ellyn Griggs earned the win in net but did not have to make a single save. It was the sixth shutout for the Ducks who now have a team goals-against average of 0.57 and have not allowed a goal in five of their last seven wins. Stevens ended the contest with a 15-2 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Ducks will return to action when they visit Drew University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
