HAVERFORD, Pa. (February 15, 2009) – Senior sabriest Laura Sodon posted a 14-4 outing to help the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team earn a fourth-place finish on Sunday at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championships held in Haverford, Pa. The squad went 3-3 on the day with wins over Hunter College (18-9), City College of New York (19-8) and Yeshiva University (24-3) to bring the season total to 17 wins. The Ducks ledger of 17-6 is the second best record in the 35 year history of the program.
Stevens fell to tournament champion Haverford College (17-10). Johns Hopkins University took second overall as the Ducks dropped 21-6 to the Blue Jays. The third loss came to Drew University (17-10), as the Rangers placed third overall.
Junior sabriest Erica Mondadori finished 13-5 on the day, while in foil, freshman Alexandra Lyons posted a 10-7 mark and senior Khairun Nisa Aziz produced a 9-7 mark. In epee, senior Rachel Cannell went 9-8 during her bouts. Sophomore epeeist Meagan Ritter also carded a 9-7 showing. With today's performance Aziz moves into second all-time at Stevens for wins in the epee weapon as she currently stands at 42 career victories.
The Ducks are excited to host the EWFC Individual Championships next Sunday at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. In addition, Stevens will submit six of its fencers which met the standard for selection to the NCAA Championships. Those members include Mondadori, Aziz, Sodon, Ritter, Cannell, Lyons and senior epeeist Sureen Roslan. The Ducks will have one more competition before the NCAA's, in which Stevens will partake in the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships on February 28.
