HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 9, 2008) – Sophomore Allyson Kingman helped to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team to a 6-3 win against SUNY New Paltz Wednesday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J. Kingman teamed with senior Whitney Bender at first doubles to record a 9-7 victory as Kingman notched a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1) at second singles. The Ducks have one more match remaining on their Spring schedule against The College of New Jersey.
Stevens was true to form once again in doubles play having swept the field. Bender and Kingman overcame the sophomore senior combination of Stephanie Schara (Huntington, N.Y.) and Dana Lim (New City, N.Y.) at first doubles, 9-7. The freshmen tandem of Morgan Scalzi and Mine Bese upended the freshmen pair of Juliette Brandon (Bronx, N.Y.) and Danielle Garbarino (Holtsville, N.Y.), 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Nicole Portner posted an 9-8 (3) victory at second doubles against juniors Lyndesy Lovinger (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Kerri Serkes (Massapequa, N.J.).
At first singles, Bender fell to Lim in straight sets (6-0, 6-1), while Kingman took down Schara, 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. Portner recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles as Bese dropped at fourth singles by a 6-2, 6-1 count to freshman Ingrid Maryansky (Forest Hills, N.Y.). Appleheimer picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at fifth singles against Serkes, while Brandon took down Scalzi at sixth singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The Ducks return to the courts on April 22 against TCNJ in Ewing, N.J. at 3:30 p.m. in their last match of the 2008-09 season.
