Portner, Kingman Lead Women's Tennis Past Alfred

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 19, 2009) – Sophomore Nicole Portner captured her third second-flight doubles win of the season to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team to its fifth consecutive dual-match victory following an 8-1 win over Empire 8 rival Alfred University. The Ducks are now 5-1 on the season with a 3-0 league ledger.

Freshman Brooke Catanzano and sophomore Morgan Scalzi got Stevens off to a fast start with an 8-2 win over Alfred's Sarah Foster (Adelaide, Australia) and Holly Seidewand (Webster, N.Y.) in No. 2 doubles action. Junior co-captain Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Alexandra Handel would then stake Stevens to a 2-0 advantage with an 8-3 win in No. 3 doubles. Portner and Kingman completed the sweep in doubles with an 8-4 victory in No. 1 doubles over Griffin Currie (Erie, Pa.) and Autumn McLain (Oneida, N.Y.).

Catanzano would keep things rolling in singles play defeating Brittany Bowen (Avoca, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-3, in fifth-flight singles before sophomore Mine Bese downed McLain, 6-2, 6-1 in third-flight singles to up the Ducks' lead to 5-0. Kingman would then follow suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Currie in top-flight singles, before Alfred notched its first win of the day on Seidewand's victory over Appleheimer in fourth-flight singles, making it 6-1.

Portner would increase the Stevens margin with a 3-6, 7-6, 10-5, come-from-behind victory over Foster, before Handel closed the door on Alfred with a 6-3, 6-4 win in sixth-flight singles.

Stevens returns to the court for a match-up with St. John Fisher College on September 20.
