Women's Tennis Rolls to Seventh Straight Win; Ducks Defeat Stockton, 6-3

POMONA, N.J. (September 30, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team continued its impressive start to 2009 with a 6-3 win over Richard Stockton College on Wednesday afternoon in Pomona, N.J. Stevens jumped out to a 3-0 lead early by sweeping doubles action and went 3-3 in singles competition to seal the win. Junior Allyson Kingman, freshman Brooke Catanzano, and sophomore Morgan Scalzi all went 2-0 on the afternoon as the win pushes the Ducks' record to 7-1 (4-0 Empire 8).

Catanzano and Scalzi captured the Ducks' first victory of the day with an 8-4 win over Ospreys' seniors Christy Alexander (Centerville, Ind.) and Melissa Wernock (Manchester, N.J.) in second-flight doubles. Stevens' junior co-captain Kendra Appleheimer and freshman Alexandra Handel would then score an 8-3 victory in third-flight doubles over senior Ana Estevez (Pennsauken, N.J.) and junior Christina Ledwith (Ambler, Pa.) before Kingman and sophomore Nicole Portner completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 decision in first-flight doubles.

Kingman would also notch a victory in No. 1 singles action defeating Alexander 7-5, 6-0, while Catanzano bested senior Jen Sikora (Dorothy, N.J.) in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Scalzi would down Stockton junior Nicole Rodriguez (North Bergen, N.J.), 6-0, 7-5 in No. 6 singles for the Ducks' third singles victory.

Stevens returns to conference action when it plays host to Elmira College and Ithaca College on October 3 and 4, respectively.
